create a 200 character summary from a longer html string

this is a quick function that can create a 200 word plain text summary from a html string. Also added the option to specify the char length of the string.

Function

function create_summary($html_string, $max_length = 200)

Just add your string and specify the lengh and it will return the summary string.

PHP

function create_summary($html_string, $max_length = 200) {
	$summary_return = "";
	$html_string_stripped = strip_tags($html_string); // strip the html tags
    if(strlen($html_string_stripped) >= $max_length) { // check if the string is greater than the $max_length value
    	$summary_return = substr($html_string_stripped, 0, 200) . ".."; // add the length summary and some dots on the end.
    } else {
		// just assign the string to the summary and return it as its under the max length anyway
		$summary_return = $html_string_stripped;
	}
	return $summary_return; // return our new summary string.
}

// testing
$my_html = '

The problem with hoarding is you end up living off your reserves. Eventually, you’ll become stale. If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing. This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish. . . . Somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you.
